Jim P.’s Cataract Surgery Story
Jim P. underwent advanced cataract surgery at San Francisco Eye Institute with Dr. Margaret Liu. His cataract had affected his vision to the extent that he was no longer able to enjoy many of his hobbies. Now, Jim can see clearly and is so grateful to Dr. Liu.
This is Jim’s story.
What are Cataracts?
For most people, cataracts are a part of the eye’s aging process. In fact, up to 50 percent of Americans will have at least one cataract by the time they reach the age of 75. A cataract causes the lens of the eye to become cloudy, which leads to blurry vision, distortion, and a muted appearance to colors.
Cataracts usually progress slowly, and at first people with cataracts can experience some vision improvement by updating their prescription for eyeglasses. Eventually, however, cataracts will advance to the point where vision is impacted severely. When this happens, the cure is cataract surgery, where the cloudy lens of the eye is removed and replaced with a clear lens.
Jim’s Cataract Surgery Experience
Now in his 70s, Jim is a retired stuntman who enjoys a variety of hobbies including using a telescope, reading, driving, and working on his computers. Due to a childhood trauma, Jim lost vision in one of his eyes. Years ago, he was diagnosed with a cataract in his remaining good eye, and in recent years began to experience an impact on his vision. As Jim’s vision became more and more affected by his cataract to the point where it impacted his enjoyment of his hobbies, he discussed his situation with Dr. Liu, who had been his eye doctor for years.
When Dr. Liu told Jim that a simple procedure could restore the clarity of his vision, he was excited to get the process going. Jim felt at ease with Dr. Liu and the team at San Francisco Eye Institute, and says that his cataract surgery was fast and comfortable. His recovery after cataract surgery was easy, and now Jim says that his vision is great. According to Jim, since cataract surgery “colors really pop and the clarity is amazing!”
Now, Jim is able to get back to enjoying all of his favorite activities. When asked what advice he would give to someone considering cataract surgery, Jim said, “It was the easiest procedure I have ever experienced. I would never hesitate to do it again.”
